| INSPIRATION FOR THE LONG WOODEN TOBOGGANIST
LWT was inspired by a couple of things... The first influence was the nature documentaries I watched growing up as a kid. The Hinterland Who's Who vignettes, produced by the Federal Government of Canada, had ingrained in me the importance of Canada's woodland creatures. I remember learning about the beaver, musk ox and caribou while waiting for Rocket Robin Hood to come back on. But it really was Jacques Cousteau that I had in my mind when I wrote the LWT. I remember how excited and passionate Jacques was with each new adventure. He was taking us to a world we had never been, to meet creatures we had never met. Jacques' passion kept us amazed and interested even if it was just a pile of kelp we were looking at. The second influence for the LWT was my childhood growing up on the Canadian Prairie with memories of tobogganing and skating on the very same riverbank that the short was shot on. The location was actually beside the Lasalle Mennonite Family Cemetary where my grandparents and many relative are buried. It is also down the road from my Grandfathers old farm. In summary the LWT is really my childhood. Less some of the more graphic things in LWT, of course. I figured I should share something unique that the rest of the world and the international film festivals could appreciate as different, both visually and culturally. Winter, toboggans, a French Canadian narrator and sex on the ice. it doesn't really get anymore uniquely Canadian than that. Enjoy! Andrew Wall - Writer/Director |
